Building castles and memories— fun, learning, and teamwork combined.
Combining maths, design, and teamwork—outdoors and hands-on.
This castle workshop is more than just history—it’s an immersive way to strengthen your children’s understanding of shapes, symmetry, and design technology. Through collaborative building activities, your class will put key maths and D&T objectives into practice while developing vital teamwork and communication skills.
By working with natural items and large-scale materials, children gain confidence and practical experience that sticks far beyond the classroom. All in your school’s outdoor setting that makes learning active, memorable, and fun.
Transport your class back to medieval England with this immersive, outdoor learning experience—perfect for bringing your Castles topic to life while covering key curriculum objectives.
We’ll begin by setting the scene of medieval times, exploring the different structures of castles and identifying their key features. Children will investigate the shapes and designs used in castles, linking their learning directly to 2D and 3D shape knowledge.
Next, it’s time to build! Your class will work together to construct a large-scale castle using bamboo sticks and elastic bands. This collaborative task supports the development of problem-solving, teamwork, and fine motor skills—while reinforcing shape recognition.
With their castle complete, children will dive into medieval identity and symbolism by learning about coats of arms and castle flags. They’ll then design and create their own symmetrical flags using natural materials, creating beautiful imprints through a tactile hammering technique. Each child will take home their unique flag—a lasting reminder of a memorable day of learning.
All materials are provided. All we need is your outdoor space and a class ready to get creative!

Kind words from our teachers:
Meet our friendly team of workshop leaders to see who may be visiting your school!
We can work with a wide range of outdoor spaces and love showing schools new ways to make the most of what they already have. For this particular workshop, we do need a small grassy area—but even a narrow verge is enough, so please don’t worry if most of your outdoor space is concrete.
All we ask is that the area we’re using can be cordoned off during break and lunch times, so the day can run smoothly from start to finish.
Your workshop leader will keep an eye on the weather in the days leading up to your booking. If heavy rain, strong winds, or storms are expected, they’ll get in touch via email 1–2 days beforehand to rearrange your workshop for the nearest possible date—working around the weather and our availability to find the best fit.
Nope—there’s no prep needed from you! We’ll arrive with everything ready to go, including all the natural resources your class will need, so you can enjoy a stress-free day.
All we ask is that the school is ready to host us: please make sure there’s suitable parking for your workshop leader and easy access to the outdoor space (our resource trolleys are on wheels!). We’ll also need access to the building to fill up water when needed. It’s helpful if reception staff are expecting us to sign in and can point us in the right direction.
Thanks so much—we can’t wait to get started!
Yes, your usual classroom staff will need to join the workshop. While our workshop leaders are experienced in working with a wide range of children, no one knows your class like you do. Having familiar adults present helps us ensure the session runs smoothly and allows us to give the best support—especially when it comes to behaviour and any additional needs.
We see it as a team effort and really value your input on the day!
