Victorian seaside holidays outdoor workshop for KS1

Hands-on history meets outdoor creativity in this unforgettable seaside-themed learning experience!

Bring the story of Victorian seaside holidays to life—right from your school grounds! Designed for Key Stage One, this fully outdoor workshop combines curriculum-linked history, D&T, science and art to create a joyful, high-impact learning experience your class will remember.

We’ll kick off with a deep dive into the world of travel and transport from the Victorian era. Children will explore how people travelled from cities to the coast by discovering different types of boats. We’ll begin with constructing sail boats and try to make it to the coast and back against the wind, evaluating their reliability.

From there, we introduce steam power! Children will learn how the invention of steam engines revolutionised travel and transformed the British seaside holiday. They’ll then explore simple paddle boats, test and improve their manoeuvrability with passengers onboard.

With their boats seaworthy, we shift focus to the people of the past—exploring who travelled to the seaside, why they went, and how boats were eventually out competed by other modes of transport to the seaside.

Next, we get moving with traditional seaside games that offer a burst of physical fun and historical context, play that connects past and present.

Finally, the workshop winds down with a calming creative activity. Pupils will explore how Victorians commemorated their holidays at home, using real seaweed and printing techniques to create their own seaweed artwork to take away.

Common QUESTIONS:

For this particular workshop, we need a flat outdoor space with access to an outdoor tap, fitted with a hose connector. This is required to fill the pool which is a key component of the workshop.

We also ask that the area we’re using to be cordoned off during break and lunch times, for safety.

Your workshop leader will keep an eye on the weather in the days leading up to your booking. If heavy rain, strong winds, or storms are expected, they’ll get in touch via email 1–2 days beforehand to rearrange your workshop for the nearest possible date—working around the weather and our availability to find the best fit.

Nope—there’s no prep needed from you! We’ll arrive with everything ready to go, including all the natural resources your class will need, so you can enjoy a stress-free day.

All we ask is that the school is ready to host us: please make sure there’s suitable parking for your workshop leader and easy access to the outdoor space (our resource trolleys are on wheels!). We’ll also need access to the outdoor tap with hose connector attached to fill our pool. It’s also helpful if reception staff are expecting us to sign in and can point us in the right direction.

Thanks so much—we can’t wait to get started!

Yes, your usual classroom staff will need to join the workshop. While our workshop leaders are experienced in working with a wide range of children, no one knows your class like you do. Having familiar adults present helps us ensure the session runs smoothly and allows us to give the best support—especially when it comes to behaviour and any additional needs.

We see it as a team effort and really value your input on the day!
