Helping Schools Make Outdoor Learning Work
Our outdoor learning CPD isn’t about filling time outside—it’s about using the outdoors as a powerful tool for teaching.
At Alfresco Learning, we don’t just promote outdoor learning, we train your staff to deliver meaningful, curriculum-linked lessons outside. Every part of our training is grounded in the National Curriculum, showing your team how to teach the same objectives through practical, engaging outdoor approaches.
Whether you’re looking to boost pupil engagement, improve wellbeing, or build a whole-school outdoor learning culture, our training is built to support your goals—and your team’s confidence.
01
A purposeful approach to curriculum outdoor learning
Every aspect of the training is designed and delivered by qualified primary teachers, with practical experience of implementing the approach in the classroom – making us different from typical outdoor learning companies.
Our approach delivers the curriculum. We promote utilising outdoor learning as a tool for effective teaching & learning, not as a separate subject.
02
Easy & instant implementation
We will show you how to utilise the outdoor spaces you already have, using resources already available to your team.
We don’t promote adding expensive equipment to your outdoor spaces. You’ll see from our sample lesson plans on The Hub, that our activity styles require minimal resources. Meaning staff finish our training with outdoor activities they can use the next day with their class.
03
Personalised support and advice
We tailor our training to each individual school and each individual team. Considering staff experience and the types of spaces available within the grounds.
Time is given to the team during the session to address any concerns, leaving them feeling empowered. Our aim is to ensure any barriers your staff or pupils may face to curriculum outdoor learning are fully addressed before we finish the day.

outdoor learning requires extra time within timetables.
For decades, outdoor learning has often been shaped by voices outside of mainstream education—specialists in outdoor environments without classroom teaching experience. As a result, many schools have been led to believe that outdoor learning requires additional time, resources, and qualifications that simply don’t fit within the realities of a primary timetable.
At Alfresco Learning, we take a different approach.
Rooted in our own teaching experience, we understand that outdoor learning should be a powerful teaching tool, not a standalone subject. It’s not about campfires or bushcraft, it’s about using the outdoor environment to enhance curriculum delivery, engage children more deeply, and support their holistic development.
Our training equips your school’s greatest asset—your staff—with the confidence, knowledge, and practical strategies to teach outdoors regularly and purposefully, using the space and resources you already have.
Whether your barriers are staff confidence, logistical constraints, or knowing how to make the most of your outdoor space, we’re here to help. With experience supporting schools across the UK, we’ll work with you to create a sustainable and impactful approach to outdoor learning in your setting.

All of our staff training is led by our leadership team; Jenny, Hollie, and Angharad—qualified teachers with extensive classroom and outdoor learning experience. This ensures every session is grounded in real-life teaching practice and tailored to the realities of primary education.

Our training does not include Forest School. Instead, we focus on curriculum-based outdoor learning, helping teachers bring the National Curriculum to life outside the classroom. Unlike Forest School, which involves specialist skills such as tool use, fire, and additional insurance requirements, our approach shows teachers how to use their existing expertise and minimal resources to make the most of outdoor spaces. We simply equip them with the skills and confidence to do so for effective teaching and learning.
Our training has been carefully designed using our expertise and experience in teaching, ensuring it meets the real needs of schools. Many existing outdoor learning accreditations are created by experts in nature and the outdoors, rather than in education and pedagogy. Because of this, we have chosen not to align our training with external accreditation providers. Instead, we focus on what truly benefits teachers and pupils. Looking ahead, we are developing our own accreditation to further support schools with a framework that reflects both educational rigour and outdoor learning practice.
Yes, our training is suitable for both teachers and teaching assistants. Whether staff are leading outdoor learning with a whole class or working with small intervention groups, they will find the training valuable, as everything we share is designed to be flexible and adaptable. It is also highly beneficial for teaching assistants to attend even if they are not planning to lead sessions themselves—by being part of the training, they can fully support whole-class teaching and help embed the approach across the school.
Simply access to your outdoor space! We bring everything your staff will need to take part in our practical training day. We even provide a handbook to refer to afterwards – we ask staff to leave notebooks aside so they can get full involved in experiencing outdoor learning for themselves.
Check your email inbox, we will send you a weather update and let you know if any adaptations need to be made. It’s also helpful if you can set up a ‘base’ in the school hall with seating for all of the staff.
We have worked with hundreds of schools across the country and are highly experienced in tailoring our training to a wide variety of outdoor spaces. This adaptability is a key strength of our approach and one of the reasons it works so well for schools. Before the training, we’ll arrange a call to discuss the spaces you have available and may ask for photographs—this helps us prepare and ensures we can make the very best use of your existing environment.
Absolutely—we can provide training for groups of more than 30 staff members, and even deliver MAT-wide training. Simply include your requirements in your enquiry, and we will work with you to create a tailored plan that meets your school’s needs.
You don’t need our training in order to use The Alfresco Hub. If your team already has experience with outdoor learning, you may find you can implement the approach independently using the guides provided. That said, many schools do choose to book training with us as it helps embed the approach consistently across the whole staff team, ensuring everyone feels confident and aligned.
