Five lesson plan front covers for a set of Year 6 maths lessons on statistics, to take learning outdoors.

Year 6 - Statistics

These active Year 6 outdoor statistics lessons bring data to life through practical, large-scale activities. From human pie charts and conversion graphs to collecting data for line graphs and calculating the mean, pupils build fluency, teamwork, and confidence in interpreting and representing information.

Lesson Plans

Constructing pie charts

During this outdoor lesson, your children will be introduced to the concept of pie charts by creating a human pie chart on your playground! They’ll then have the opportunity to explore further by creating large-scale pie charts using natural resources, looking at how they work and what they show.

Learning objective:

To understand how pie charts are constructed

Interpreting pie charts

In this engaging outdoor lesson, children will collaborate to construct pie charts in teams, using clues found around your outdoor space. They will deepen their understanding of pie charts in addition to revisiting learning about fractions, percentages and angles.

Learning objective:

To construct and interpret pie charts

Constructing and interpreting line graphs

The main activity of this outdoor lesson gives your children the opportunity to deepen their understanding of line graphs. They’ll work in a physically active way to collect their own data, present it and interpret it using line graphs. This lesson requires minimal preparation and few resources, for a quick and fun outdoor session!

Learning objective:

To create and interpret line graphs

Creating a kilometre to miles conversion graph

Have your children apply their skills of creating line graphs to construct a conversion graph for miles to kilometres and vice versa. They will then use their conversion graph to calculate the total distance of a journey they take around your outdoor space.

Learning objective:

To understand how to use a conversion graph

Calculating the mean of a data set

During this fun outdoor lesson, your children will work in an active and practical way to generate several data sets, calculating the mean of each. In addition to this, they’ll work as a class to discuss what the mean can tell them about a set of data and apply their learning to a reasoning problem.

Learning objective:

To calculate the mean of a set of data
