Year 5 - Geometry

Creating and identifying 2D representations of 3D shapes

LO: To create and identify 2D representations of 3D shapes.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations.

Develop your children’s understanding of 2D representations of 3D shapes with this outdoor lesson. Your children will use the space and various natural and classroom items to create representations while securing their understanding of shape vocabulary too. A simple-to-prepare lesson you can just head outdoors with!

Identifying and creating different types of angles

LO: To identify and create different types of angles.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles.
  • To draw given angles, and measure them in degrees (o ).
  • To identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.

The main activity of this outdoor lesson involves your children getting creative with chalk to create artistic designs that they’ll use to deepen their understanding of angles and symmetry. They will also revisit and reinforce learning about reflection, shape and angle vocabulary and how to use a protractor.

Finding missing lengths and angles

LO: To find missing lengths and angles.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To identify: angles at a point and one whole turn (total 360o), angles at a point on a straight line and 1/2 a turn (total 180o),  other multiples of 90o.
  • To use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles.

Have your children apply their knowledge and understanding of shape and angles in this active outdoor lesson. They will create and describe different types of angles and amounts of turn and solve problems in pairs.

Translating regular and irregular shapes

LO: To translate regular and irregular shapes.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal sides and angles.
  • To identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.

During this outdoor lesson, children will develop their understanding of regular and irregular shapes while working large-scale and incorporating physical movement to carry out and describe translations on a large coordinate grid.

Designing and building a 3D structure

LO: To design and build a 3D structure.

National Curriculum Objectives covered:
  • To identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations.
  • To draw given angles, and measure them in degrees.

In this creative and open-ended lesson, children will create a 3D structure to fit a purpose in the school grounds! They will start by creating designs using 2D representations and then use recycled materials to create a 3D prototype outside. This is a great lesson to revise all the skills taught in this unit!

Amazing resources which have really helped our school be more confident in using the outdoor space to enhance the children's learning. Great, fun, easy to follow lesson plans, which link directly to the key objectives!

Sharon Taylan

The Alfresco planning hub is a fantastic resources with lesson that are easy to pick up and teach. I use them both as full lesson, lesson starters and intervention session for an LSA. Would highly recommend.

Karyn Weglarz

I am a member of the Planning Hub and I love the variety of lessons provided. Most lessons need only simple materials that I usually already have on hand. I love taking my students out with these lessons.

Amy McTague

Brilliant resources, easy to follow and adapt for learners, clear progression!

Laura Walton

The online planning hub is a lifesaver. I teach in KS1 and the children always ask when we are going outside and parents always say how excited the children are about their outdoor learning. It is exactly what I was looking for and have now been using it for several years. Thank you for such a brilliant resource!
