Gardening club guide for teachers in the summer term

Gardening Club - Summer 2

In this hands-on Summer 2 gardening unit, children actively harvest crops, prepare and sow new seeds, and create seasonal projects like flower jars and leaf collages. Through garden games and collaborative activities, pupils develop practical gardening skills, an understanding of plant life cycles, and a respect for garden wildlife in a fun, interactive way.

Lesson Plans

Harvesting potatoes

This session gives your children the chance to harvest one of the crops planted last half term, as well as deciding on which garden jobs are needing to be completed this half term, finishing with sowing turnips that will be harvested later on.

Session aim:

To have harvested some potatoes and sown turnips.

Sowing lettuces

There’s plenty to do in the garden this session! Children will get a chance to sow some new crops as well as have their first taste of some harvested earlier for a ‘farm-to-fork’ experience.

Session aim:

To sow lettuces, pot on chives and taste your harvest!

Harvesting carrots

In this session, children will work together to harvest the carrots, then use their leaves (and other nature finds) to create some leaf collage cards for someone special.

Session aim:

To have harvested and eaten some baby carrots.

Protecting crops

Play some games with children during this session to help them understand a little more about the creatures we share our gardens with, while also learning about how we can protect our crops from them, while still keeping the creatures safe too!

Session aim:

To understand the creatures we share our garden with, and learn about protecting crops in an environmental way.

Creating flower jars

In this session your children will use their blooms of calendula flowers to create flower jars to take home, as a memory of their time at gardening club this half term.

Session aim:

To have made a ‘flower jar’ using calendula.

Having a harvest feast

Celebrate the final session of your gardening club with a harvest feast! In this session, children will harvest their last remaining crops and use these to create summer salads and a delicious desert to taste!

Session aim:

To have a ‘harvest feast’.
